Psychologist Erik Erickson noted that the trusting and generous Sioux, hunters of South Dakota allow their children to breast-feed for several years. Breast-feeding only stops when the child signals it is ready to do so. This can last up to five years. Since Erickson’s primary stage of development – the oral-sensory stage – deals with trust issues, he finds that the result of extended breast-feeding is unconditional trust.
