What are some similarites between the ancient and modern olympic games?
Many of the traditions and customs from the ancient Olympics have continued into the modern age. Among them are the torch relay, the lighting of the flame from a flame lit in Greece, the Olympic flag, hymn ( the words of the modern hymn are the ones which were used in ancient Greece) and the awarding of medals as prizes. The Olympic motto also has not changed over time- it is still “Citius, Altius, Fortius” which means ” Faster, Higher, Stronger” in the Greek language. The custom of having the Olympic flag carried into the Stadium by six people, rather than by one person on a flag pole, still stands as well. Apart from all of this, many of the sports which were in the ancient Games are also in the modern ones. Track and Field events were primary in the ancient Games, and they are still a major part of the modern Games.
