What are some short term and long term effects of schizophrenia?
In the short term, schizophrenia causes a person to feel frightened and anxious, because they cannot control the sensations and audio hallucinations they are experiencing. In the long term, people with schizophrenia often become isolated. They realize the symptoms make others uncomfortable. It’s hard for them to make a living. Medications often have to be changed because they may become less effective over time. It’s hard for them to maintain friendships and relationships because their behavior is unreliable. They may isolate themselves because of the messages they are receiving from the unaccountable voices they hear. Psychotropic medications are often as bad as the disease because the person becomes numb and unable to engage with others or have any enthusiasm.
