What are some problems of the St. Johns River?
The above poster is quite correct. Because the river flows slowly, it is difficult to flush pollutants. The major pollution sources are: discharges from wastewater treatment plants and runoff from urban and agricultural areas after it rains. This runoff carries pesticides and other pollutants into streams that lead to the river. The pollution tends to be concentrated around the urban areas. You may want to check out these two documents as they both contain quite a bit of information on the strategies the St Johns River Water Management program is doing to address their main areas of concern in the Lower Basin. 1) Point source pollution – from industry or wastewater treatment plants. 2) Nonpoint source pollution – Examples include runoff from farms, streets and yards. 3) Bacteria in the river’s tributaries 4) Aquatic habitat 5) Water quality compliance and enforcement 6) Public awareness of river issues http:/
