What are some potential disadvantages of a VTS?
Because these systems are designed to reduce management requirements, they have little flexibility in handling wastewater. When the runoff is generated, it goes to the sediment basin then (if there is enough) into the VTA. There is little storage capacity to hold the water for use during drier weather. Because sod-forming grasses are required in the VTA, it is not possible to apply the wastewater to row crops that may have greater economic return. The total area required will probably be greater than for a basin system, but the VTA will be producing grass that can be harvested and used for feed.
