What are some plays that Shakespeare wrote that deal with the role and treatment of women?
Women play pivotal roles in almost every single one of Shakespeare’s plays, with the exception of a few of the histories. Speaking as a senior English major who is planning to attend graduate school for Renaissance and Shakespeare studies, I would encourage you to completely disregard the superficial response from the person who responded before I did (without you is how i disappear). Ophelia, while many perceive her as a weak character, plays an important role in Hamlet. Though her suicide seems to deem her a weak character, it seems, in fact, that killing herself displayed strength. She was, after all, a Catholic; by killing herself, she risked ETERNAL damnation. Also, as a side note, Ophelia, at one point, runs around telling everyone, essentially, what whores they are as she sings her song and hands out flowers. She’s not afraid to speak her mind. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, on the other hand, has absolutely nothing to do with the subjugation of women in regard to the four lovers. T
