WHAT ARE SOME OTHER FOES OF FRAMED PIECES?
Sunlight/Lights – The UV component of sunlight can cause pigments and inks to fade or change color tones and can cause paper and cloth substrates to discolor and become brittle. UV can be emitted from almost any light source, including fluorescent lighting. Humidity – High humidity such as that found in most basements hastens the degradation of cloth and paper and promotes the growth of molds and mildew. Acidic Materials – cardboard, frequently used at a backing material in older frames, has an extremely high acid content which can literally burn the framed work. High Temperatures – such as you will find in an attic, garage or many storage units during the summer months. The increased temperature speeds up the rate of acid degradation. In fact, every 2 degrees increase in temperature doubles the rate of acid burn.
