What are some of the ways that teens communicate differently on the internet concerning alcohol and drugs?
DR: When you think about teen culture as it differentiates [itself] from adult culture, they’re not talking abut the downside of drug and alcohol. They’re not talking about how devastating their divorce was because they’re alcoholic and they can’t manage their lives. They’re talking about how fun it was during spring break when they got high or drunk at this or that location. They’re talking about how fun it was at so-and-so’s party. I think that’s what I mean. Teen culture and young adult culture more than any other is going to promote the use of drug and alcohol use as a fun, accepted, promoted way to utilize free time. That’s different than other age groups. The higher up in age you get in this life, the more responsibility you’re going to have and the more your aberrant behavior – drug- and alcohol-related behavior – is going to be frowned upon by a peer group.
