Very early on the medical comminuty called it “Minimal Brain Dysfunction” (MBD), and for years that was the accepted term for the disorder or disability with “soft neurological signs.” It seems like we are moving back to this with renewed interest in neuropsychological evaluations. Students with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or hyperactivity (now known as ADHD) were thought to be learning disabled. They had many of the “soft neurological signs.” Today many of the students with soft neurological signs may have been involved in a physical accident which caused a traumatic brain injury, aka closed head injury, aka concussion. They have lost “executive functions” e.g. memory and concentration.
