What are some of the signs of mold?
The most obvious is visible mold, which can be a variety of colors, and/or a musty odor. A musty odor is an indication that there may be live mold growing somewhere nearby. A mold odor is caused by the digestive enzymes and waste products of the organism. The mold spores can become airborne and can travel throughout a building. Keep in mind that if you are smelling it, you are breathing it. The odor will often dissipate if the mold dries and becomes dormant, but this does not make it any less of a concern. Dry mold spores will become airborne more easily than wet ones. Other signs that mold could be present is water staining. If building materials have become wet and were not dried quickly and thoroughly, it is likely that some mold has grown. An experienced investigator often times sees indications of possible mold growth that the untrained eye would not.
