What are some of the reasons why domestic abuse victim might not report it to the authorities?
I am going to state the reasons that will not have a victim report abuse and since commonly the abuser is male and victim female I will refer to them as that but baring in mind that abusers are also females and abuse is common in homosexual relationships. Also fear is one of the main elements but I will try to provide a variety of other reasons. Studies have shown that it is harder to convince judges and juries to convict in abuse cases, because of prejudices against complainants as well as misconceptions about what “type” of man would commit such a crime. Courts can reserve a certain scepticism and disparaging biases against females are still the rule of the day in courts even amongst female employees. The police and courts may have little training in how to respond to a person who has suffered chronic or terrifying abuse.
