What are some of the problems with mining?
In a general sense, mining is connected with environmental harm. That said, it depends on a myriad of factors as to the specifics of that damage; whether it is water or soil contamination, loss of habitat, debris dam collapse, or a mix of those and the many not mentioned. Some mines cause harm because of the chemicals they use (like cyanide for gold extraction), but only harm their surroundings when a spill occurs. At other mines (specifically where sulfidic ore is being extracted) a natural chemical reaction occurs with the rocks and rain producing sulfuric acid. Now keep in mind that mines are not deliberately trying to do damage. As problems are identified, such as the surfuric acid chemical reaction, new laws and regulations are implemented to reduce and eliminate the hazard. (Im a geologist at a mine where the sulfur rich waste rock must either be put in special containment outside or has to be put back underground where it won’t get wet and create acid).
