What are some of the more famous works of art with pastels as the major medium?
Degas was a master of painting with pastels as were many of the impressionists. Pastels are considered to be either a drawing medium or painting medium depending on the manner in which they are used or the artists interpretation. many artists may hop up the value ( saturation ) of a color by introducing pastel into an oil painting. During the late 1800’s pastel became more acceptable. However, it does not hold up as well archivally and the paper and medium needs to be protected properly to ensure longevity by being protected from the elements. When I am researching something in art I try to find a starting point and then branch out from there. Degas and Letrec are fine starting points.
