What are some of the main differences between German culture and American culture?
Culture changes over time as historical events affect the culture. American culture is in fact made up of signicant German influences. Colonial America was not just an adjunct of England it contained a large number of German immigrants. The 30 years war 1618-1648, and 17th c French attacks on the Rhineland sent waves of refugees to the colonies. William Penn even traveled to the German states to distribute pamphlets encouraging settlement in Pennsylvania. This was the era of the ‘little ice age’ in Europe and 1708-1709 was the worst winter in memory although most of the winters were longer and colder than today’s Religious persecution and a draft sent thousands of Palintines from the Baden area on the move. One of my family lines arrived as a 3 generation family of 17 in Philadelphia in 1720.
