What are some of the leading causes of cancer?
Dr. H: There are multiple things that can trigger cancer. In my view a combination of environmental insults, including various kinds of chemicals and infectious agents, can cause cancer. Each of us has our unique genetic components, and some people are more susceptible to cancer than others. But if you have the genetic susceptibility, and you encounter the environmental insult that could result in cancer, nutrition still can make the difference. In a person who has had adequate nutrition and has a properly functioning immune system, it will never go on to be detectable as cancer. MOD: Can you tell us the nutrients that need to be addressed for proper nutrition? Dr. H: In terms of looking at nutrition in a broad sense, we can look at macronutrients, micronutrients and fiber. With macronutrients, your three big categories are your proteins, your carbohydrates and your fats, all of which provide fuel via calories.
