What are some of the indirect effects from acid rain on humans?
2. Accelerated weathering of buildings and sculpture. Buildings and sculptures made of calciferous sedimentary and metamorphic minerals are particularly susceptible to accelerated weathering caused by acid rain. Limestone, marble, dolomite and other calcium carbonate-rich stones are common construction materials, particularly in older buildings, and are highly reactive to acid rain. Many marble sculptures and decorative architectural elements have been moved indoors to protect them from acid rain and other atmospheric pollutants. Sometimes a replica is substituted, as in the case of Michelangelo’s David sculpture.
