What are some of the hazards that SSA seeks to address?
There are three main hazards: First, any possible effects on Europe’s space assets – operational scientific, telecommunication, navigation and weather satellites – due to collisions with debris of other satellites in orbit or due to other in-orbit events, such as an explosion of a discarded upper stage. Second, the hazard to human safety on the ground and in airspace posed by the growing population of space debris and by near-Earth objects (NEOs) upon atmospheric entry. Third, any possible disruption or damage to space or ground infrastructure (satellites, power grids, networks, telecommunications, control systems) stemming from the space environment, such as radiation from Solar storms.
