What are some of the cons of working in auto body repair?
Slow periods,(busy in winter, slow in summer…you need to bank money in the busy periods for the slower months) poor coordination of repairs and paintwork, lack of parts on time or wrong parts, waiting for authorization to repair…then they all come at once and you have 3 days to fix five cars, book times do not reflect actual repair times, have to modify aftermarket parts to fit, interaction with other techs which may be greedier than you for work, lower pay than comparable trades like plumbing, carpentry, etc but good techs can make double the rate if they do quality mud work…repair versus replacing sheetmetal,…… As with any job, you have to work as efficiently as possible and watch out for/anticipate problems and get along with other people as best you can. As with most careers, it takes 5 years to get truly proficient and 10 years or more to excel.
