What are some of the challenges you faced as the head of the Italian Embassy in Nigeria?
Time is one of the challenges in the country. Another thing I will say is visa. Nigerians don’t like to follow the rule and to bring the passport in time. If they have to travel to Italy, it is at the last moment that they come for the visa. And you have to go through all the process before you get your visa. For example businessmen, they are always late in bringing the passport. I am not saying others are not also coming late, but especially businessmen, VIPs, ministers and even governors. Other challenges are that, sometimes, it is difficult to say no to somebody who is a very nice person. But today it is something that is done directly by the computer and there is a central computer, which is dealing with visa. We cannot for example impose our own request. But it is always somebody who doesn’t have a face who is doing this job away from Nigeria. But it is like Nigerians don’t know. Challenges are many, but all of them are easy to solve. Nigerians believe they are a great nation.
