What are some of the benefits of holding US citizenship over holding lawful permanent resident status?
US citizens have the right to vote in local, state and federal elections. They can hold public office (although naturalized citizens cannot become the President or Vice President of the United States). US citizens travel with American passports and receive government protection and assistance when visiting foreign countries. Naturalized US citizens have greater rights to seek legal residency for their family members in the US than do lawful permanent residents. Also, children under 18 living with their parents in the United States gain citizenship status automatically when their parents become naturalized.
