What are some of the basic differences between African male and female lions?
Answer… African lion (Panthera leo) prides can contain between 1-6 males and 4-12 females. There are striking physical differences between males and female lions. Male lions have a mane and are physically larger than female lions, usually weighing on average between 175-190 kg. The average weight of a lioness is about 120 kg. However, the weight of a male can reach 240 kg, three times the weight of an adult man, while a lioness can reach up to 180 kg. Male lions need to eat 7 kg of meat each day and the females need 5 kg. The diet of the African lion consists of medium-sized to large herbivores such as buffalo, gazelle, gemsbok, hartebeest, impala, kob, warthog, wildebeest and zebra. Lions can grow to 2 meters long and can live up to 15 years.
