What are some of Meriwether Lewiss most noteworthy accomplishments?
Besides his exploration of the Louisiana Territory with his partner William Clark, he was accomplished in other ways. When he was young he volunteered to fight in the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794 at the age of 18. He entered regular military service in 1795 and by 1801 he was the personal secretary to President Thomas Jefferson. He served the president through 1803. It was Jefferson who recommended him for the journey into the new territories. The rest is history. Many Americans dream of making a journey of discovery akin to the one the Lewis and Clark. It is a romantic idea to discover a new land and face both its beauty and its hardships.
