What are some methods to relieve eyestrain from too much computer use?
This is a common complaint of many people who have to work in front of the computer all day. Here are some tips and exercises that will help relieve eyestrain:
1. Be sure your monitor is situated at least 20 inches from your face.
2. Do not place your monitor directly in front of you; instead place it at a slight angle so that you may look ahead periodically (instinctive response) and rest your eyes.
3. Rub your palms together for 15-20 secs so that they become warm. Then gently cup your eyes (but do not touch them with your palm). Close your eyes and remain like this for about 2 minutes. Your eyes should relax and the darkness should get blacker.
4. Practice scanning your eyes around the room in a loose and fluid way. Try just moving them across the room around the outlines of objects. Do this for 2 minutes. The idea is to let your eyes roam and relax.
5. Put your thumb six inches from your nose. Focus on your thumb and take a deep breathe and exhale. Then focus on an object 10 ft away and take a deep breathe and exhale. Go back and forth like this 15 or so times.
