What are some literature activities for a preschool class?

My favorite literature activities were ones where we read a book then did an activity related to it. For example: Read “The Doorbell Rang” and then bake cookies. Read “If You Give a Moose a Muffin” and bake muffins. Read “Three Billy Goats Gruff” and act out the story. (The used a table and chairs for the bridge and made costumes out of stuff in the art area.) We could do a whole week’s worth of activities based on a story. These are called “story stretchers”, “story extenders,” or “literature extension activities” and there are resource books and websites full of ideas. Your local library may have Story S-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-r-s: Activities to Expand Children’s Favorite Books by Shirley Raines. That’s a book I used a lot!
