Oedipus the King – Sophocles Literary Devices: Symbols, Imagery, Allegory Eyes, Vision, and Blindness The motif of eyes, vision, and blindness is pervasive in Oedipus the King. Eyes, not surprisingly, represent the ability to perceive and obtain knowledge. Oedipus, whose pursuit of understanding lead him to ruin, symbolically gouges his eyes out so that he no longer has to metaphorically see. Paradoxically, while he was keenly insightful in the past (think solving the sphinx’s riddle), he cannot understand the truth about himself. Although sight symbolizes the pursuit of knowledge, ironically the ability to see does not symbolize wisdom.
