What are some issues of special education and disabilities?
One major issue with disabilities that has existed since special education programs began is labeling. In order for a child to receive any legal aid, she must be identified as having a disability. This requires her to be labeled as being exceptional or having that disability (i.e. learning disabled, mentally retarded). Labels are socially stigmatizing for any child, and most people make them out to be derogatory or marks of inferiority. Labels cause depression, withdrawal from society and emotional stress. It is necessary, but it can tear a young kid’s social life apart. An issue with special education is the growth of inclusion in our schools. Inclusion is a large part of special education. It provides a student with disabilities a chance to be a part of a normal or grade-level classroom. It can promote growth in a disabled student’s strong subjects while giving the opportunity to socialize.
