More information is being gained by NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft, which mapped about 30% of the planet during a flyby on January 14, 2008. MESSENGER will make one more pass by Mercury in 2009, and begin orbiting in 2011, at which time it will survey and map the entire planet.
