Metabolife used to contain ephedra, which has been banned in the United States since 2004. The FDA determined that the herb posed an unreasonable risk to the people who used it. Ephedra was used in many dietary and energy supplements. It caused heart palpitations, tremors, increased blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks and insomnia. In 2001, Metabolife energy bars because of extremely high amounts of vitamin A, which had been linked to serious injuries including liver damage, brain injury, and birth defects in infants whose mothers had consumed the bars during pregnancy.
