What are some important things I should know about Lotronex?
Lotronex can cause serious gastrointestinal injuries, several of which have resulted in patients’ deaths. As of November 10, 2000, less than a year after being approved for use in patients, the FDA received more than 70 adverse reaction reports, 10 of which required immediate surgery and five that resulted in death. Lotronex was voluntarily withdrawn from the market to be studied again. After more research was conducted, the manufacturers decided to re-release Lotronex, but with restrictions (only for use in patients for whom the benefits of the drug outweigh the risks). Also, only physicians who have enrolled in the manufacturer’s prescribing program are allowed to prescribe the drug.
