Lyon was the centre of the French silk industry and is one of the most famous towns in France for the excellent cuisine and the number of good restaurants there. It has an unusual position in that is is where two major rivers, the Rhône and Saône, converge. It is a vibrant town which has everything from an attractive medieval quarter (now a world heritage site) to a splendid basilica (Notre Dame de Fourvière) perched on top of the cliff overlooking the river. There is also a medieval cathedral (Saint Jean) at the bottom of the cliff by the river. The Town Hall is magnificent out and in, and the interior is dripping with crystal chandeliers copied from Versailles. The town also has a Roman theatre and important major Roman remains, and several magnificent museums full of artistic and historical treasures. Lyon university is one of the best in France.
