What are some Haitian soups?
Soup Joumou – Soupe Au Giraumon The pumpkin used for this soup is called calabaza, commonly known as Cuban squash, West Indian pumpkin, and giraumon. This soup is traditionally served on New Year’s Day and is prepared early New Year’s morning with lots of pumpkin and lots of beef. All Haitians commence the New Year with this soup, no matter where they live. If people visit, they offer them homemade grenadine sherry and “Joumou””. One very distinctive feature of the soup is that the beef it calls for is rubbed with the juice of limes or sour oranges before being added to the pot. This lends to the soup a slightly sour tang, a welcome balance to the pumpkin’s sweetness, but also an apt metaphor for the Haitian Revolution’s bittersweet legacy.
