What are some good tools, books, and catalogs to have for someone who is just starting to garden?
You have a lot to look forward to–I’m excited for you! I’m sure you can get on plenty of seed/plant vendors mailing lists with a quick google search. (White Flower Farms has a gorgeous catalog—most all catalogs are tempting and informative—use them for info and buy locally if you can). I suggest you stroll local garden centers first and do your own research; you’ll get better info from locals. Most importantly, have a plan—and start small! While it’s hard to resist all those wonderful things in a garden center, it’s just so easy to become the kid in the candy store. Buy the best tools you can afford as you need them. Don’t rush to fill your tool shed. I have a 20+-year old Smith & Hawken trowel that has been a dependable joy and an even older Haws watering can with a brass rosette.
