What are some good tips for writing a newspaper article?
1. Keep it simple. Don’t get flowery or too thesaurus-happy with it. 2. The lede should be no more than 25 words and encompass the who, what, when, where, why and how of the story. A person should be able to read the lede and know exactly what the story is about. 3. Show, don’t tell. Give examples and use quotations. 4. The article should contain what we call a nut graf (graf = paragraph). The lede should tell people what the story is about, but the nut graf should kind of sum it up and tell people why they should care. 5. Start out with specifics and get more general the further the story goes along. This is called the inverted pyramid method. 6. End it where it feels natural. Most hard news stories DON’T have tidy endings, because most news stories are tweaked and edited by copy editors and reporters don’t know exactly how or where their stories could be edited down.
