What are some good tips for a youngster starting out in investigative photography/ journalism?
Get some work experience at your local paper, you might not be covering interesting stories but it’ll give you good experience of getting the right moment and working under pressure/to a deadline. Go to protests and marches, vigils and demonstrations and build up a portfolio of interesting images. The best thing to get in frame is contrast, so either tonal, emotional, political (remember that pic from the may day riots a few years back of a kid smashing into a McDonalds, protesting against the Capitalist values, whilst wearing a Nike t-shirt, stuff like this is great). People are starting to get wise to the fact that you’re still takingf pics even if you don’t have the camera to your face, but you can get good shots this way if you do it quick then pretend to be checking the settings or something Tune your eye for this kind of stuff and look for it online. Don McCullen etc are good people to study for influences, and Cartier-Bresson of course. Good luck!
