I rather like chrysanthemums in the fall, especially since they do well in cooler weather and last that much longer because of it. Barring any extremely harsh weather during the winter, they’ll come back next year, too. Also, if you’re not too concerned about having plants there immediately, you could plant tulips and other spring bulbs for next year, so long as you don’t live where it’s warm during the winter (the very southern states of the US typically are not conducive for spring bulb survival).
