Where to start! Industrial began in the mid- to late 1970’s and was directly named by Genesis P. Orridge from the seminal band Throbbing Gristle – it was named Industrial music because it was on Industrial Records. By the early 1980’s, Industrial took on a more electronic feel, thanks to inspiration from bands like Skinny Puppy, Cabaret Voltaire, Clock DVA, Laibach and Throbbing Gristle off-shoot bands Psychic TV and Chris and Cosey. The mid-1980’s saw the rise of bands like Ministry, Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Front Line Assembly, Einsturzende Neubauten, Revolting Cocks, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult and KMFDM. Nine Inch Nails combined the sounds of Skinny Puppy and Ministry and added a slight tinge of commercialism and melody to make it more palitible for the general masses.
