What are some good hypoallergenic pets? NOT CATS OR DOGS?
Hedgehogs, plus their living environment, tend to be pretty low on dust creation, and due to their small size they don’t generate a lot of loose hair or dander. The hair they do have is also pretty thick and not likely to scatter around, generating a strong allergic response. If you get them young and socialize them well, they can be cuddly and interactive. I was very impressed with the first hedgehog I purchased, especially because people said they were dumb and boring. It couldn’t have been further from the truth. The ideal way to keep them is on aspen bedding, or recycled newspaper products that are dust controlled. It will help with your asthma in a big way to have a pet that prefers a dust free living environment just like you! It’s worth looking into, and if you can go visit with one at a pet shop you can see whether or not they generate an allergic response for you. Hopefully they don’t because they can be really great pets!
