I’m not belittling the benefits of a good diet based on lots of fruits and veggies. There is much to be derived in promoting good health and skin tone — that being said, a good diet will not get rid of acne. Acne is caused by hormonal upheavals combined with bacteria in the deeper layers of skin (that no amount of washing can reach). Furthermore, it could be dangerous to take an overabundance of certain vitamins (such as A and E) as they are stored in the body fat and may become toxic. Dermatologists generally first try addressing the bacteria factor (as this is the easiest to control) by giving oral antibiotics or skin ointments with antibiotics in them. If you are female, they may try placing you on birth control pills, as this regulates hormones and will often improve acne. If you have severe refractory acne, they will try Accutane, a very potent oral medication that invariably works for everyone (I’ve seen the most horrible cases cleared within a month).
