I’m not sure what you meant by recipes but E. L. Doctorows Billy Bathgate is spectacular. It was nominated for the Pulitzer and has the richest story. Billy, at 15, is the leader of some young gang wannabes during Prohibition. He catches the eye of a local bookie and witnesses the real Mafia from the inside.
