If you’re ready to wade into the world of serious, good fantasy, then there are a large number of really good books and series. When you read my recommendations, keep the following in mind: I’ve been reading fantasy, science-fiction and horror since I was eleven (thirty-something years ago), starting with Dracula by Bram Stoker. That’s a good book to start with, because it combines all three genres of what is sometimes called “the literature of the fantastic.” Also keep in mind that I love The Lord of the Rings, really enjoyed Harry Potter (though I thought it needed tighter editing throughout the series), thought Inheritance was mediocre, and have never read Spooks. OK, now the books/authors: – The Obernewtyn Chronicles by Isobelle Carmody (6 books so far, with 1 to go) – The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon (3 books) – The Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman (7 books) – anything by Guy Gavriel Kay, but start with The Fionavar Tapestry (3 books) – anything by Pat
