It depends what you mean by action movies. Battle Royale would be one I would personally recommend as it is both exciting but also very clever and a sharp satire.

The anime genre is also one that is a great place for action. A good example would be Ghost In The Shell, thought by many to be a big influence on The Matrix films. Perhaps the most acclaimed of them all would be Akira, although admittedly this may not be to all tastes.

And no reference to Japanese action would be complete without mentioning the large array of Godzilla (or Gojira to give him his proper name) and other monster movies available!

Yeah Akira Kurosawa is good like the other poster mentioned, RAN and Kagemusha:The Shadow Warrior are his most accessible although if you’re really into movies try Seven Samurai or Yojimbo or Sanjuro which are in Black and white The mother of all Samurai films though has to be the Lone Wolf and Cub series about Ogami Itto The Shogun’s executioner who is disgraced by false accusations and is banned from the kingdom and forced to take the path of an Assassin, he takes his son Daigoro (Cub) on his journeys. There were six movies in all with just some crazy whacked out scenarios e.g battling hundreds of Ninjas in the snow, battling assassins in the Desert, in the forest in the rivers etc , just really well acted and paced and exciting considering they were all made in the 70s. These were the movies that were the inspiration for Quentin Tarantino to make the Kill Bill movies (in Kill Bill 2 when Uma Thurman is with her daughter right at the end asleep Lone Wolf is on the TV) The themes of h
