What are some fun facts about Poland?
One interesting special day is All Soul’s Day in November. While it’s a common Catholic holiday, in Poland it’s strongly observed, and everyone comes to light colored candle jars in front of graves of their loved ones, and also those whose graves are old, dilapidated or forgotten. The spectacle is amazing, and the whole cemetery is flooded in brilliant lights. It’s a continuation of a very old ritual dating back a couple thousand years. Another holiday is Saint John’s Kupala, in which people jump over fires, a tradition predating Christianity. During Wianki (Vyanki) people go to the riverbanks and float wreaths with candles on them on the water. The sight is marvelous there too. If it floats to a woman on the other side, she’ll find love.
