What are some facts about the Black Rat Snake?
The Black Rat Snake, also known as the Mountain Black Snake and Pilot Black Snake, lives in the North Central U.S., Vermont through to Wisconsin and south to Northeast Texas and Georgia. The coloring is black to dark brown with patches of red, yellow, orange or white. They can grow up to 8 feet in length. How do I care for and feed the Black Rat Snake? A good size tank of about 30 gallons will do well. Be sure it is secure to avoid escape. Provide the snake with a place to hide and branches for climbing. There should be a heavy bowl for water. Sometimes, when the snake sheds, it likes to immerse itself in the water bowl. The diet should be mice and small rats fed every 4-6 days.
