Probably the most significant is weather technology. Between radar and satellites, we now have excellent knowledge and warning of any storms, greatly reducing the cost and loss-of-life associated with surprise storms. Bulletproof vests lead to the development of ballistic nylon, which is used in dozens of products, including most soft sided luggage. Artificial rubber was developed during WWII, to make up for the loss of natural rubber from Singapore. Without the artificial stuff, we would not have the great winter and all-weather tire compounds we enjoy today, nor could the sheer volume of tires be produced. Coal gasification and liquification was developed by the Germans during WWII. This technology will likely help replace the loss of natural oil that we’ll experience over the next decade.
