After slavery became illegal, they weren’t too happy about it in the South. They pretty much wanted to keep life as close to the status quo as possible, with Blacks not being able to vote, eat at lunch counters with Whites, miscegenate, or anything “uppity” like that. The solution was to enact various Jim Crow laws. Who/what was Jim Crow? It was a racist song/dance act about a stereotypical Black man. He was a stock character for White guys in black face paint.
