What Are Some Examples Of First Nations Literature In Canada?
Over the past several years, many Canadian universities have started offering courses in First Nations (Native/Aboriginal) literature. Previously, this field of study was all but ignored. There are a number of outstanding examples of contemporary works of fiction, or partly biographical works written by First Nations authors. One such example is an autobiographical book entitled “Half-Breed,” and written by Maria Campbell. Campbell is of Métis origin and her 184 book recounts the story of her childhood as a Métis girl in northern Saskatchewan. As a teenager, Maria tried to break free of her Métis roots and ended up marrying a white Canadian, but soon found herself destitute on the streets of downtown Vancouver. She later rediscovered her heritage, thanks to Cheechum, her great-grandmother.
