What are some easily obtained items I can use to dissolve limestone?
VINEGAR… if constantly mixed or agitated, vinegar will effectively dissolve limestone with no problem however, if the limestone is left in the vinegar for a period of a few days to a week the result will be crystals of lime instead of the solid rock…. experiment, place a golf ball size limestone in a beaker with vinegar in it, only up to half the height of the stone….. let the vinegar soak in then evaporate and you will have a pretty despisee… add a copper penny or Even magnesium or iron and change the color of the limestone crystals…… BUT IN YOUR CASE Leave the limestone submerged 90% in the vinegar with only the highest point of the stone peaking out… this crystal is very brittle and is easily breakable by the human hand so if one should do this over a period of weeks (breaking the crust off the stone over and over again) ultimately the fossil will be the last thing left in the jar.
