What are some early signs my dog is about to go in heat?
When a dog goes into heat it’s called an estrus cycle. The first cycle happens on average at 6 months of age. A female dogs estrus cycle Proestrus- the dog starts bleeding from the vulva and develops progressive swelling to the uterus last 5-9 days on average. Ovulation usually occurs towards the end of proestrus. The female becomes attractive to the male. Estrus- the bleeding diminishes but the vulva remains swollen; the dog is receptive to males at this time. Two days after ovulation the eggs can be fertilized by sperm. Estrus on average lasts 6-12 days. Diestrus- the dog comes out of heat and the vulva begins to return to normal.
