The disadvantages of the telegraph were: 1. A wire had to be run from point to point. Thus a break in the wire anywhere would disable it. This could mean a break in an undersea intercontinental cable as well. 2. Because of the distance communications needed to be transmitted and line losses, it was necessary to add repeaters along the way. Often these were actual physical operators that would pick up a transmission at an intermediate station, and then re- transmit it on to the next point. 3. This necessity of relaying a message resulted in delays getting it through. 4. On a single overland aerial wire, a single message only could be transmitted at any one time in any one direction.
