What are some different ways to make home made water filters?
Water filters are just layers of sand or fine particles that the water needs to travel through. Sand is by far the most common filter media although for most household filters a finer material called diatomatious earth is used. This has the added benefit of conditioning the water with minerals as well. Also commonly used is activated carbon. This removes chemicals and heavy metals from the water and improves the taste. In commercial home water filters this is incorporated into the body of the filter but there is no reason why you couldn’t have a more simple activated carbon filter on its own after the main filter. My suggestion would be to start with the containers. You need something with connections at either end and that can handle a little pressure. The finer the material you put in your filter, the greater the pressure it will have to withstand. Fill the container with whatever material you think is suitable (in general, you should try and get particles of roughly the same size, a
